The T.I.C. Industry Association has taken note of recent reporting indicating that a landslide in Rubaya in January 2026 has contributed to temporary constraints in the availability of tantalite material in certain supply chains.

Based on information presently available to market participants, the implications for internationally recognized conflict-free supply chains are expected to remain limited. In the context of the ongoing local security situation over the past two years, the operational presence of internationally certified companies in the immediate region had already declined substantially prior to the incident. As a result, formally audited international supply chains have had only limited direct exposure to production originating from the affected area.

Some public commentary has interpreted recent developments as indicative of broader structural disruption in the global tantalum market. At this stage, available market information suggests that observed short-term logistical interruptions and localised price movements — including those reported in regional trading centres such as Rwanda — are consistent with temporary supply pauses that may follow humanitarian emergencies or operational suspensions, and do not necessarily indicate permanent structural changes. Such market responses typically reflect precautionary adjustments during periods of uncertainty and do not necessarily indicate sustained changes to global supply fundamentals.

Reporting has also highlighted concerns regarding potential material flows from conflict-affected areas. The T.I.C. industry association continues to promote the application of established enhanced due diligence guidelines, including those aligned with guidance issued by the OECD. These internationally recognized mechanisms provide for risk-based assessment, chain-of-custody controls, independent verification, and corrective action procedures designed specifically for complex operating environments.

The global tantalum market remains geographically diversified, with established industrial production in multiple regions outside Central Africa contributing materially to overall supply. This diversification, developed over many years, provides an element of structural resilience to localized disruptions.

The Association expresses its profound regret for the loss of life associated with this tragic event in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and extends its sincere condolences to the affected communities. The continued strengthening of safety conditions for miners and of risk-prevention measures remains of fundamental importance, and sustained efforts by all relevant stakeholders are essential in this regard.

The T.I.C. Industry Association will continue to follow developments closely and remains committed to supporting responsible, transparent, and resilient supply chains in constructive cooperation with stakeholders across industry, government, and civil society.
