Winner of the 2026 Anders Gustaf Ekeberg Tantalum Prize, this research reports a single-crystalline form of θ-phase tantalum nitride with a measured room-temperature thermal conductivity of approximately 1,100 watts per metre-kelvin, nearly three times that of copper.
The research could open new possibilities for thermal management in AI hardware, power electronics and other high-performance technologies. While the material remains at the laboratory demonstration stage, the judging panel highlighted its scientific impact and its potential implications for future tantalum demand and supply chains.

- The T.I.C. was established in response to concerns within the tantalum industry regarding the lack of useful information on tantalum source materials. The initial purpose of the T.I.C. was to spread information about tantalum and to promote the common interest and welfare of the producers, especially with public and private authorities, organisations and agencies. Since its foundation, the T.I.C. has grown to encompass niobium and all stages of the tantalum/niobium supply chains.
